Rethinking Nature

A visual study of nature now

Graduation project Willem De Kooning Academie (2021).

The result of this project took the form of a book that centers around observing, associating, and reconsidering the concept of ‘nature’. It presents various perceptions and definitions of the term ‘nature’ and the ways in which we, as humans, connect with ‘nature’. The book prompts the viewer to question what nature means and what the instability and dynamism of the term can entail, using a visual language that is open to wide interpretation.

With this project, I aimed to learn more about how people relate to the word ‘nature’ linguistically. I investigated the impact of the definitions we attach to it on our philosophical foundations and the divide between humans and nature. In the research leading up to this book, I interviewed 86 participants about their definition of and relationship to ‘nature’. This resulted in a broad range of descriptions of nature that I translated visually to highlight the differences at a glance. One of the visual translations involved the use of frames/cutouts to emphasize the various contexts and perspectives of the participants.
